Adam Warlock is a big deal in the Marvel Universe and the most important character in the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy run to not be confirmed for the movie. Many, myself included, wondered if Warlock was the role Benecio del Toro was cast to play before he was confirmed to be The Collector. When you talk about the cosmic side of Marvel, Adam Warlock's name always comes up. Beyond Guardians of the Galaxy, it's blatantly apparent that Marvel is building to a cinematic adaptation of the Infinity Gauntlet. Two Infinity stones were mentioned in Thor: The Dark World and Peter Quill is seen reaching for what is probably a third stone in the Guardians trailer. This is probably all building to The Avengers 3 and Adam Warlock could very well factor into it. After all, Adam Warlock is the man who gathered all of Earth's heroes to battle Thanos in the Infinity Gauntlet comic book event. He is not essential, as Marvel can always make changes when adapting the story to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the possibility is there. Perhaps this is too big of a role to have a cameo since the casting of a name actor would probably be included, but listen carefully for any verbal reference that might possibly be made in Guardians of the Galaxy.
