Guardians Of The Galaxy Spoilers: 10 Ways It Sets Up Future Marvel Films
8. Some Pretty Sweet CG Characters
One of the big questions about Age Of Ultron is how exactly the eponymous evil robot is going to be presented in the film. Noted character actor/miscast Office guest star James Spader has been confirmed as "playing" the character, but what exactly does "playing" in this sense mean? Will he be walking around in a tin metal suit, Iron Man style? Full respect to Spader, but can he really be the imposing presence necessary for such a role? Does that mean it's going to be a totally CG performance then, possibly with a bit of motion capture? That opens a whole new can of worms, since whilst we're definitely improving with regards to digital characters, there's still issues with the uncanny valley and, well, budgetary constraints. Similar questions were raised at the news Josh Brolin was being cast as Thanos, the big purple-faced space god we first caught a glimpse of in Avengers' post-credits sequence. No, the one before the shwarma. In the case of Brolin, it looks to be a bit of both: Thanos didn't appear to be the No Country For Old Men star in goofy make up but a computer generated character with Brolin's voice and some of his facial characteristics, like what they did with Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. What's more exciting is how damn good Rocket Raccoon and Groot look, two characters who couldn't really be motion captured. Unless you happen to know any slender 9-foot tree people or plucky two-foot raccoons. The aplomb with which these two are pulled off - never looking weird or out of place amongst the human actors - opens the door for all manner of weird and wonderful characters we would previously have never expected to see on screen. Fingers crossed for MODOK as the main villain of Avengers 3.
