3. The Plot Is Original
Of all of the directors currently working in the MCU, James Gunn arguably has the least source material to work from. The team he's basing his movie most on was only formed in 2008 and there haven't exactly been masses of major story arcs to draw from so far.
To that end, it's not really surprising that Gunn says he won't be basing his story on any existing source...
The advantages of such an approach speak for themselves: he's not tied down by canon, he has more creative freedom, and somewhat crucially he doesn't have to fear his plot being leaked early by someone religiously reading through the comics. It keeps us all on our toes and that's no bad thing.
And for reiteration, there will be no cross-over with the Animated Guardians Of The Galaxy series either...
