4. The Meaning Behind Star-Lord's Weird Shirt

Since it first appeared in earlier trailers, fans have been trying to figure out exactly what the words on Star-Lord's shirt actually mean, and one insanely industrious Redditor actually used concept art from the first movie to figure out that it means "Gears Shift" in an alien language conceived specifically for the film.

It was reported with the drop of the new trailer that Pratt had actually been asked to explain the meaning of the shirt during a set visit, and his answer?

"I can't. Somebody can, because it's a real language apparently. They've created a real alphabet, but it's from, I think, I might be making this up, but I think it's from the candy, a candy wrapper from the first movie. It's like, this is like a space brand of some kind, so it's like on my shirt the way anyone, it would be like wearing an ironic Reese's Pieces shirt."

Well, there it is. Still no idea how Gears Shift is in any way a pleasant, marketable turn of phrase for a candy wrapper, though. Maybe that's the real joke.
