In any other film, delivering a performance like Polly Perkins would automatically place high on the Sucked half of this list, but here Paltrow's right on point, her intrepid journalist perfectly fitting the retro-stylings of Kerry Conran's serial throwback. Coming when her and co-stars Jude Law and Angelina Jolie were at the peak of their popularity, Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow was for a time an embarrassing flop on their filmography, but as time goes by the film, and it's performances, are getting something of a reevaluation as audiences become more aware of the joke. Paltrow's hammy and a bit silly, but it's knowing enough to entertain rather than just court derision. There's a debate to be had whether Paltrow needed much acting skill to play the part, but there's no denying the end product worked.
