Halloween: Ranking Every Movie From Worst To Best
1. Halloween (1978)
It doesn't get any better than this.
Carpenter's original film remains the greatest in the franchise's history, and one of the greatest horror films of all time. In its simplicity, this film was able to capture lightning in a bottle.
From Carpenter and Dean Cundey's voyeuristic tracking camera shots, to breakout performances by Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance, to Carpenter's instantly iconic score, to Nick Castle's downright phenomenal work as The Shape himself, this film got everything right. It remains one of the most incredible examples of the power of suspense in cinema, the kind that would make Alfred Hitchcock himself proud.
Sequences like Annie's death in the car or Laurie's final confrontation with Michael are positively mythic in their power, which is precisely why other filmmakers have spent the last forty years trying to replicate it, both within this franchise and others.
Through all the years, sequels, reboots, and continuities, John Carpenter and eternal ass-kicker Debra Hill's original film remains a timeless classic that has never been bested.
