Harry Potter: 10 Behind The Scenes Secrets That Will Blow Your Mind
7. Making Hagrid Look Bigger Than He Is
Regardless of his love for spiders and goofy attempts at flirting, Rubeus Hagrid has maintained his position as one of the most loved characters in the Harry Potter franchise.
But as you can imagine, being half-giant brings with it a few problems, especially when the actor walking in his shoes is a bit shorter than the height the role requires.
For those of you who don't know, Hagrid was portrayed by Robbie Coltrane who, although not a giant, still measures up to a whopping 6 feet and 1 inch. With the use of upward facing camera angles to exaggerate his size though, passing off as a half-giant was pretty easy when alone on screen.
This was, however, far more difficult when walking or standing alongside other cast members. This is why rugby legend Martin Bayfield was brought on as a stand-in body double with his height of 6 feet and 10 inches towering above even Coltrane.
Wearing a practical mask to make him appear more like the Hagrid we know and love, Bayfield was able to walk alongside Harry and his friends while fooling the majority of viewers into thinking nothing had changed.
