Harry Potter: 10 Most Shocking Reveals From Pottermore

8. Lupin Was A Werewolf Because Of His Dad€™s Big Mouth

Lyall Lupin, father of Remus, worked for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures during the original fight against Voldemort, and this is where he first encountered Fenrir Greyback. The crazed, bloodthirsty Werewolf had been brought in for questioning over the death of two Muggle children, though he fooled the Ministry into thinking he was just a homeless Muggle with no idea what was going on. Because Werewolf Registry was practically non-existent at the time, Greyback got away with his awful crime, but Lyall Lupin saw through his lies, imploring the committee to keep the suspect in detention until the next full moon. This was laughed off to Lupin€™s rage, and he flew into a speech about how all Werewolves were soulless, evil and deserving of nothing but death. Remembering these words, Greyback decided to pay a visit to the Lupin household. As Lyall€™s son Remus lay asleep in bed, the Werewolf broke in through the window and attacked him. Lyall was able to act in time to save his son's life with a number of powerful curses, though the damage was done and Remus would henceforth be a fully-fledged Werewolf. Though he had only been repeating what was the common view on Werewolves at the time, Lyall€™s actions changed his son€™s life forever, and he kept the sequence of events that lead to the attack secret for many years out of fear that Remus would seek retribution.
