Harry Potter: 10 Most Shocking Reveals From Pottermore

6. Minerva McGonagall€™s Broken Home And Lost Love

Professor McGonagall was a constant rock for Harry throughout the series, especially in Dumbledore€™s times of absence and eventual death. She defended the school against Voldemort in the Battle of Hogwarts and was always there for Harry if needed, though her cracking a smile was a rarity and thanks to Pottermore we now know why she seemed so sad a lot of the time. The daughter of Muggle Reverend Robert McGonagall and witch Isobel Ross, Minerva was part of a mixed-blood family, though the problem was that her dad had no clue that witches and wizards even existed until after she was born. Fearing that he would run a mile when he found out, Minerva€™s mother kept her magic secret until their daughter arrived, but it broke the trust between them and it simply couldn€™t be fixed. Having witnessed the breakdown of her parent€™s happiness, she faced a heart-breaking decision of her own when she fell in love with a handsome, clever and funny son of a local farmer. Dougal McGregor soon proposed to Minerva, and she accepted the Muggle farmer's hand in marriage, though that very same night realised that they could never be, knowing the route it would take them down all too well. Staying and hiding her magic would mean the end of all of her ambitions as a witch, locking away her wand and living a life of secrecy. On the other hand, she faced losing her new job at the ministry if she told Dougal the truth and violated the International Statute of Secrecy, and so she was left with only one option €“ she broke off the engagement without telling him why and left Scotland for London, never fully recovering from the lost love.
