10. Quidditch Is A Real Sport
During my research for this article, I was shocked to find out that Quidditch is a real Muggle sport! There was big article in Sports Illustrated in 2011, covering the 95 US college teams, who competed in the 5th annual World Cup that year! Quoting from the official IQA Facebook page - "Quidditch is an official college sport that combines elements of rugby, dodgeball, and Olympic handball, with four balls (including a human snitch) and seven players per team vying for control of an elliptical pitch. It is a full-contact, co-ed, broom-riding competition, where 80 of the best teams in the world, will all be competing for the top spot in the World Cup next April in Myrtle Beach, S.C." The IQA oversee close to 1,000 teams in 43 countries! USA Today has an article on the sport written a couple of weeks ago. And the first British Cup took place last weekend in Oxford and was covered on the BBC website! Who knew? Not me. The world - certainly, the college world - is ready for a Quidditch movie; I can see a documentary being done by some enterprising film student! Or if there's not, there should be.
