Harry Potter: 15 Spells Ranked From Weakest To Strongest
4. The Patronus Charm (Expecto Patronum)
One of the most effective defensive spells known to the Wizarding World, the Patronus Charm offers its caster protection for Dementors, and conjures a spirit guardian that will protect you and others from otherworldly harm.
Known for its complexity and difficulty, the Patronus can be used to fend off incoming danger from various Dark creatures, and can even be used to hide secrets from those around you. For example, Remus Lupin often used a Patronus Charm to conceal his lycanthropy from his closest allies whilst he was teaching at the school.
The charm comes in particularly handy in The Prisoner of Azkaban, where Harry casts a supremely powerful Patronus to hold off dozens of Dementors at once, and in The Order of the Phoenix, where Harry uses it to save himself and his cousin Dudley from the creatures, leading to his near-expulsion from Hogwarts for using magic outside of school.
Everyone's Patronus is different, taking various shapes depending on the user, and it stands tall as one of the most damaging and useful spells in the franchise.
