Harry Potter: 5 Times Ron Was Smarter Than Hermione
4. When He Recognised Crookshanks Wasn’t An Ordinary Cat – The Prisoner Of Azkaban
Before starting her third year, Hermione bought a fluffy but rather ugly-looking cat from the Magical Menagerie. Though Crookshanks was generally well behaved, he did not get along with Ron’s rat.
Hermione believed there was nothing more to her cat’s behaviour than natural instinct, but Ron was not convinced. On several occasions, he suggested Hermione’s pet seemed to have a personal vendetta against Scabbers. He even claimed Crookshanks was able to understand human conversation.
Sure, this latter point wasn’t entirely accurate, but his general assumption that Hermione’s pet was much cleverer than the average cat was spot on. Due to his intelligence, Crookshanks could tell Scabbers was not a genuine rat. Indeed, he was so smart, he was able to communicate with Sirius Black (whilst he was a dog) and help him break into the castle.
