The first chapter in one of the most remarkable franchises ever put on the big screen, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was first released all the way back in November 2001, four years after the original story by J.K. Rowling was published.
Whilst it's fun nowadays to return back to the film every so often to marvel at where most of these recognisable and accomplished actors began their journeys and how far they've come, Philosopher's Stone was very much an introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizardry back in the early 2000s. Whilst the story works fine as a standalone (had Warner Bros. decided to pull the plug post-release), the impressive CGI for the time, fantastical settings and surroundings and simple enough plot made this the definitive blockbuster of its day and ensured that the Harry Potter universe would dominate the big screen right up until the conclusion of its eighth chapter in 2011.
