4. Alastor Moody
Mad-Eye Moody was one of key members of both iterations of the Order of the Phoenix. During the first wizarding war, the Auror hounded Lord Voldemort's Death Eaters, and was the key reason why so many of them, including Igor Karkaroff, were sent to Azkaban.
Like Sirius, Moody went through a testing time between the wizarding wars, as he was locked up and held prisoner by Barty Crouch Jr. for a whole year. However, once rescued, Alastor had lost none of his skill or drive, and his view of constant vigilance on the world was more appropriate than ever.
In Dumbledore's absence, there were a few that helped lead the Order, but none more so than Mad-Eye Moody. Every decision and every action went through him first, and he was the there for the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, and the Battle of the Seven Potters.
Such was Alastor Moody's reputation as a skilled wizard and Auror, Voldemort attacked him straight away during the latter as he believed Harry would be flying with the strongest wizard the Order had. As soon as Moody's fake Harry, Mundungus Fletcher, disapparated, Moody was killed by the Dark Lord. Though he sacrificed his life that day, his diversion allowed Harry and the others to reach the Burrow safely.
