Neville Longbottom is one of many characters with a fascinating arc. He starts off as a forgetful, accident-prone boy who struggles academically. Indeed, he doesn’t really show any talent in The Philosopher’s Stone, and he’s often used for comic relief.
This remains the case for many years, but in The Order of the Phoenix, J.K. Rowling starts to give Neville more depth. As a devoted member of Dumbledore’s Army (the secret organisation which resists Professor Umbridge and practices spells), he becomes a much more powerful wizard. Towards the end of Harry’s fifth year, he demonstrates his bravery still further during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.
But it’s during The Deathly Hallows that Neville fully embraces his destiny. Without Harry, Ron or Hermione’s help, Neville leads the resistance against Alecto and Amycus Carrow during his final year. And he also kills Nagini – one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes – with Gryffindor’s Sword.
As such, Neville has a great journey over the course of the series, and there are plenty of small details along the way.
