Hasn't Marvel Punished Us Enough?
Lungdren and Jane versions) would lie somewhere near the bottom. The more recent version was frustrating as hell. The tone seemed to swing wildly - one moment it was a hard-as-nails revenge story the next a slapstick cartoon. The scene where Thomas Jane fights Kevin Nash to a classical soundtrack was odd to say the least. Bad first movie aside, it seems Marvel and Lions Gate are ploughing full steam ahead with the sequel. The film is currently going by the working title The Punisher: Welcome Back Frank and will shoot in Montreal in September. Thomas Jane and writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh have already dropped out to be replaced by Rome's Ray Stevenson and director Lexi Alexander. Alexander's previous film Green Street was pretty surprising. It was released around the same time as Nick Love's similar football hooligan film The Football Factory and was a lot better. Whereas Love's "come-'an-'ave-a-go-if-you-think-you're-'ard-'enuff" style of filmmaking invested The Football Factory with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, Alexander captured the camaraderie and - unfortunately - the sense of community experienced by football fans much more successfully.
