Hayao Miyazaki - Ranking His Movies From Worst To Best

6. The Wind Rises

Sadly, the end of an era in the film-making world The Wind Rises is one of Miyazaki€™s definitive works, and a brilliant creation from a brilliant creator. Set in pre-WW2 Japan,it charts the true story of the life and career of aircraft designer Jiro Horikoshi as he strives to succeed in the face of adversity. The coming of age story is interspersed with fantastic dream sequences and a touching love story, with heavy symbolism as Japan careers towards the devastation of war. The decision to focus on such a controversial figure inevitably met with some friction, but it was nevertheless an important story to tell, and that is precisely where the Studio Ghibli films soar. Inevitably, the animation is visually sumptuous and it's fittingly probably one of Miyakazi's most ambitious works - the perfect full-stop on his career.
