Hellboy 3: 10 Comic Plots That Should Be Used

6. Edward Grey, Witchfinder

Hellboy Dad
Dark Horse

The closest the last Hellboy movie had to sequel bait was the scene in which the Angel of Death saves Hellboy's life, but reveals that he is likely to doom humanity if he lives. Given that (not to mention the fact that the third movie would probably be the climactic finale), Hellboy III would almost certainly feature the demonic hero facing up to his apocalyptic destiny. If it does, then Edward Grey, a spirit who watches over Hellboy and always has faith in his ability to defy fate, would be a good addition to the cast.

Grey is a badass Victorian adventurer who spent the nineteenth century battling vampires and witches for queen and country. One such mission ended with him being dragged to hell and torn limb from limb. Patched up by fairies and demons, he has spent the story of Hellboy masked and cowled and watching from the sidelines, arguing with fairies over whether the demon will bring about the end of the world or not. The new Hellboy In Hell series sees Grey's masked spirit rescue our hero from The Abyss into which he is cast following his death.

Assuming Hellboy (or someone else) might die at the end of the film (the Angel of Death did promise extra suffering for Liz after all), Grey could serve as a way to make that death rather less permanent and less of a downer.

Alternatively, a prologue to set up the story (if the "Hellboy's first mission" concept already mentioned isn't used) could feature Grey in his Victorian adventurer persona, possibly battling his enduring nemeses The Heliopic Brotherhood Of Ra (or their spinoff group The Oannes Society...)
