Hellboy Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

1. The Creative Creature Effects

Hellboy 2019

Though most of the creatures are rendered through inconsistent CGI, it's fair to say that the creature designs are themselves pretty decent, and if not quite up to del Toro's standard, they at least feel more creatively grotesque than your typical fantasy flick.

The design of Gruagach is especially convincing, while some of the revolting monsters that attack London in the film's third act feel torn right from del Toro's own Pan's Labyrinth.

And this really just confirms that, no matter how bad the film is, it certainly had some talented artists and craftsmen working on it, all of whom struggled to be heard above an out-of-his-depth filmmaker working with shockingly inept material.
