Hellboy: Rise Of The Blood Queen - 8 Things It Must Do Differently From Del Toro's Films

1. It Needs To Be A Faithful Adaptation

While del Toro's films were always faithful in the sense that they nailed both the character of Hellboy (for which we have much to thank Ron Perlman for) and his villains, they were rather restrained when it came to adapting some of the more macabre details of the Mignola comic.

They were brilliant films, and in placing Hellboy as a household name their significance really can't be overstated. The reality, however, is that the creative options for a third Hellboy were really stunted, especially in light of The Golden Army's ending and the revelation that Liz and Hellboy would be having twins. It was a massive departure from the series, and for fans more devoted to the main Hellboy canon, probably not what they had in mind for a big screen red-fisted feature.

Rise of the Blood Queen has the unique opportunity to not only reintroduce the character to a new audience (one that more than likely grew up watching the older films), but to portray Hellboy and his history in a more authentic and more comic-accurate manner. It may sting to see Perlman and del Toro depart the mythos, but change, more often than not, can be a good thing. With Marshall's horror credential's, Harbour's acting talents and Mignola's heavy involvement, it's clear that this is a film gearing up to take the character to a new and exciting place, complete with all the elements that made the original series so endearing in the first place.

And, while we wait for the Blood Queen to make her return, we have del Toro's magnificent looking The Shape of Water to look forward to. So maybe everything'll work out after all.
