Here's Why Nick Fury Wasn't In Captain America: Civil War
Too many cooks spoil the philosophical debate...
Even with Captain America: Civil War positively bursting at the seams with characters and relationships, it's hard not to immediately question where the missing characters are. Even in the film itself, General Ross brings up the question of the "misplaced Nukes" of Thor and Hulk, but there are another couple offigures that nobody at all seems bothered about: Maria Hill and Nick Fury.
The mystery of Hill's whereabouts will have to remain unsolved for now; she's presumably flying around permanently in the sky waiting for the next Avengers disaster that requires mass evacuation. That's her sole role in the MCUnow that SHIELDisn't really a thing anymore.
Fury on the other hand probably should reappear soon in Phase 3 as Cap, his Avengers and Black Widow are now all underground, and not seeking Fury out for tips would be extremely foolish. You might be forgiven for thinking that someone as outspoken as Fury, who actually brought the Avengers together might be an interested party in the events of Civil War, but he still didn't appear to cast his eye over the situation.
That, apparently, is because he would have confused matters needlessly. WritersChristopher Markus and Stephen McFeely spoke totheLA Timesandconfirmedtheir reasons for leaving him out:
"We called , but he let the line blink. Primarily it felt like one too many possible opinions. We didn't want him to take one side or the other, because that's not his place in the universe. And then we didn't want another, 'Is he still with the government? Is he opposed to the government but supporting the government?' It got to be the potential for a lot more polemic discussion that the movie did not have room for. He's the guy who put it together. He's been the sort of parent figure to the Avengers. Let the parent go away, and see if the kids can handle this. See if the kids can be who they're supposed to be without that governing voice. Um... and they didn't do that good of a job."
The writers also confirmed that they thought Fury would return to the fray forInfinity War because "it'sprobably all hands on deck." That's after KevinFeige said we'd see him before then, so Phase 3 will get a much needed injection of Nick Fury.
Presumably he's going to be asking key questions like howthe Avengers managed to so royally mess themselves up, or why the government fail to recognise the good that they've done despite all the collateral damage. He's an interesting character to put back into the mix at this point.
