1. Dredd
It was supposed to herald a movie franchise for 2000 AD's chin-heavy law enforcement anti hero Judge Dredd. Stallone had failed in the Nineties, but big hopes were hung on the shoulders of director Pete Travis. The signs were good. Unfortunately, while a minor classic, Dredd didn't bring in the box office and stands alone as a great tower block movie. While the 2012 adventure started on the streets of Mega-City One, the meat on the bones fleshed itself out within the confines of Peach Trees, the deceptively-named apartment complex lair of drugs demon Ma-Ma (Lena Headey). The Judge (Karl Urban) got more than he bargained for when his nose for crime landed him at the receiving end of a raft of the villainess's acolytes. Locating the vast majority of the film in the building meant Travis could create the world of the comic book more effectively given his relatively small budget. The streets of Cape Town proved surprisingly effective as a run-down futurescape, but the biggest star in the room was this fruit-derived tower of terror. Are there any other tower-based movies you feel we've left out? Let us know in the comments section.
