Before he put the Stormtrooper's helmet on for The Force Awakens John Boyega got down with the disaffected youth on a grimy estate in this well-regarded alien invasion comedy from 2011. British funny man Joe Cornish established his directorial credentials with the unusual story. On Bonfire Night you'd expect to see a few fireworks. What wou wouldn't expect is an army of video game-inspired creatures tearing up your hood. Gang members were forced to ally with nurse Jodie Whittaker to survive the extraterrestrial onslaught. Hoodies vs monsters didn't sound like the most promising premise for a movie, but Cornish got it to fly, down in no small part to Boyega's undoubted screen presence and a likeable turn from the always-underrated Whittaker.
