The Hobbit: 11 Amazing Things You Missed In The Desolation Of Smaug
8. The Whole Women Dwarf Joke Gets Deeper
One thing in The Hobbit that is still incredibly overlooked almost six hours in are the individuals of the dwarf company. Aside from Thorin, Kili and Balin none of the others have any rounded character; Bombur is fat, Bofur is Irish etc. Its such a issue that its not until half an hour into Desolation Of Smaug that film-only fans finally learn Gloin is actually Gimlis father. The moments a massive wink to the fans that rivals Jacksons carrot (and much broader), but it also has something that has become an incredibly odd running gag over the past ten years. In my list of easter eggs in the previous film I pointed out how some of the women in Dale had some pretty notable sideburns, hearkening back to that one brief scene in The Two Towers where Gimli goes off on one about how hairy dwarf women are. Well, after Desolation Of Smaug that whole spiel seems to strike closer to home; before the aforementioned father reveal Legolas mistakes Glions wife for a man. Jackson probably thought the joke was funny enough to have a second go around, but suddenly that throwaway scene ten years ago becomes a major touchstone between the two trilogies.
