The Hobbit: 11 Amazing Things You Missed In The Desolation Of Smaug

4. The Love Triangle Wasn't In The Film Until Last Year

One of the more contentious additions to The Hobbit has been the burgeoning relationship between dwarf Kili and Elf Tauriel. Not a complete surprise after An Unexpected Journey's Extended Edition had Kili eying up the other species in Rivendell, it's angered some fans who've dismissed it as elaborate fan fiction. What you don't want to happen is for the hate to become directed at Evangeline Lily's Tauriel. While she may not be in the original book, she's a welcome addition in an otherwise completely male world and, most importantly, wasn't always envisioned as a love interest. The whole subplot of the couple (Taurili, Kiliel?) was added to the film a year after principal photography and came about only at the request of the studio; Hollywood still struggles with the concept of women either not in relationships or pining for a man. This shouldn't be too much of a surprise. Both Arwen and Eowyn, who became well defined characters in The Lord Of The Rings films after being brushed over in the books, both ended up in relationships by Return Of The King's end. It's just a shame we had what was assumedly a subplot of Legolas' unrequited affections was axed in place of something more pedestrian.
