During early development of Scream, Drew Barrymore was actually attached to play heroine Sidney Prescott, with the filmmakers then pursuing another "It Girl" of the moment to play the film's unforgettable first victim, Casey Becker.

They landed on none other than Alicia Silverstone, who fresh off her role in Clueless, would've certainly made for a jolting opening surprise kill.

But this plan was nixed when Barrymore passionately campaigned to play Casey rather than Sidney, believing that her casting in such an upfront role would lure the audience into a false sense of security throughout the opening sequence, before her death assures viewers that all bets are off.

She wasn't wrong - Barrymore was perfectly cast as Casey, and while Silverstone would've probably fared well as a shock value death in her own right, Barrymore is so, so right for the part that it's hard to imagine anyone else doing better.
