If you were lucky enough to watch One Cut of the Dead without knowing too much about it, you'd assume it to merely be a horror-comedy about the cast and crew of a low-budget zombie film being attacked by actual zombies for real.

Yet at the end of the delirious first act, we pull back and it's revealed that the whole zombies vs. film crew setup was actually a film-within-a-film called One Cut of the Dead.

The final reel of this movie then offers up an alternate perspective of the first act, showing behind-the-scenes glimpses of all the hilarious things that went wrong, and how the cast and crew fought so courageously to achieve their vision.

This climaxes in the glorious moment where the crew's camera crane breaks, so they form an impromptu human pyramid, allowing them to successfully capture the film's closing crane shot.

As a celebration of DIY filmmaking in all of its rough-hewn turmoil, One Cut of the Dead is one of the most unexpectedly charming horror films ever.
