Hunter Killer Review: 3 Ups & 5 Downs
3. The Plot Is Bloated & Unfocused
This movie is 121 minutes long and it really makes you feel that run-time by the end of it.
The most glaring issue is that the screenplay forces two separate scenarios upon the viewer: the submarine survival plot and an above-the-ground mission to retrieve the Russian President from a rogue Russian fortress.
It would've been far more interesting for the movie to focus on the claustrophobic tension of the submarine story rather than randomly cut in cheesy, Call of Duty-esque men-on-a-mission action sequences.
The result is a schizophrenic and bloated movie that doesn't appear to have much confidence in either of its competing plots, and just hopes for the best by nonchalantly switching between them.
