Hustlers Review: 8 Ups & 3 Downs

1. It Should Have Been A Little Nastier

It's a strange thing to note that a film about drugging and robbing people that has one near-death, one death, lots of substance abuse, even more crime and a fairly vulgar approach to worldliness is also a feel-good film.

That isn't a criticism by any means, but it's definitely a shame that there's not a little more edge to the film. In sanitising some of the characters, we get everything wrapped up in a lovely little bow, but there's no way they were all as nice and harmless as that.

It would have been nice to have seen Lorene Scafaria - who looks a great new talent to watch out for more of - adopt something like Sofia Coppola's added bite from The Bling Ring or even a touch of Scorsese from The Wolf Of Wall Street. Because as much as Hustlers is one of the most disarmingly warm films of the year, it could have got away with a slightly nastier edge without really compromising too much of that.
