Even though the mix of tones in Tomorrowland doesn't really come together, it's still refreshing that Bird is bold enough to mix scenes of nuclear apocalypse and environmental collapse with a goofy bit about a robot pathetically failing to impersonate a Girl Scout. The tonal mixes in Iron Giant and The Incredibles are far more effective. Though the latter film is mostly lighthearted superhero action, with old-school domino masks and a kicking 1970s-style soundtrack, it had a surprising amount of serious content. We've already shown Helen's desperation to save her family in the plane scene. Here, things are a bit lighter, but Helen still has to find a balance between warning her kids about the dangers of the world and giving them the confidence they need to meet them. And we've already shown some pure comedy with Frozone, and we'll see a bit more in our #1 entry.
