The question of whether the Incredibles sequel waited too long to come out has just been answered thanks to a whopping opening weekend haul in the US that has propelled it into the top 5 opening hauls for superhero movies. It's also the highest opening animated movie of all time, surpassing fellow belated sequel Finding Dory.

Thanks to a massive $180m opening weekend (via Box Office Mojo), the sequel has also pushed Captain America: Civil War out of the top five of superhero movie openings, against a predicted $150m weekend haul. That's the power of Pixar and to compare other new releases, the closest performance was Tag's debut, which took $14.6m.

Even more impressively, the original movie only took $261.4m domestically in TOTAL, so by the look of it, the follow-up is set to out-perform it hugely. Could we be looking at a billion-dollar final figure? There's very little competition for it coming up (in terms of animated movies anyway - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom might take a slice of the family market and Ant-Man & The Wasp might take some superhero fans), so that could well spell a huge take.

Hopefully, that sort of performance might mean we'll get more Incredibles movies. And even more hopefully, they won't take quite so long to come out.
