Independence Day 2: 10 Things You Need To Know About The Sequel

6. The Original Plan Was For Two Sequels

Roland Emmerich pitched not one, but two Independence Day sequels to Fox when talks regarding a franchise really got going. The idea was that the first film would end on a cliffhanger that involved a small beacon of hope for humanity - a small victory, if you will - that would lead to a second film where they would completely overcome the alien invasion. Fox didn't bite. A sequel to a movie almost two decades old rarely happens. Sure, Indiana Jones and Star Wars have pulled it off, but is the Independence Day franchise on that level? Really, this is something that would have been a reboot nine times out of ten - and maybe that's a good sign. Perhaps Hollywood has picked up on the fact that as much as its audience detests needless sequels, needless reboots are even worse. With success, however, you might still see a third movie. It's just one for now however.
