8. It's The Perfect Summer Blockbuster
The script is hardly award-worthy, the acting performances likewise, but all of the elements of Independence Day converged to make a perfect popcorn movie moment in that summer of 96. It was bolder, louder and more thrilling than anything else that came out that year, packed with the kind of eye-catching moments that film fans exchange long after the film has ended, mixing spectacle with an irresistibly infectious story and the key emotional undercurrent that gave the film heart to match its flexing muscles. For Emmerich story was still king, despite the effects and the estraordinary elements, and it is that sort of commitment that is so sadly missing from some of the soulless, tasteless summer blockbusters that have released in Independence Day's wake. Now we just need someone to finally option the sequel, make Will Smith the president and have some pissed off, souped up aliens return for a course of cold hard revenge.
