Inglourious Basterds: 10 Things That Would Have Happened Afterwards
10. Marcel Escapes Through The Back Door Of The Cinema & Survives The Fire
As the cinema burned down and the remaining Nazis trapped inside the locked building were incinerated, it seems fair to assume that Marcel - who disappeared at the end of the movie having hatched a plan with his lover Shosanna to kill the entire high command - escaped through the exit door behind the screen. Though it is implied that he perished alongside Shosanna, in retrospect there probably would have been no point in that. The film tells us that there's a back exit behind the screen, after all, so it seems very, very unlikely that - once the fire started - Marcel purposely killed himself for no reason. Where did he get to, though? Well, given that Paris was under Nazi occupation at the time of the cinema fire, his options would have been sorely limited. The distraction of the mass explosions would have probably bought him some time to escape without anyone getting in his way (he might also be presumed dead), but he would not be able to linger in Paris in the aftermath of the event as the city would have soon descended into absolute chaos. Best case scenario? He managed to move north, perhaps towards Belgium, where the news of Hitler's death could have resulted in a major coup and subsequent evacuation of the Nazis occupation there. That, or he was picked up by the Allies and taken to safety. Then there's the third, more cynical option: he was killed by the Nazis during his flight.
