Interstellar: 11 Insane Spoilers Everyone Is Talking About

6. Matt Damon Is The Surprise Villain On Planet 2 (Mann)

As was apparently a huge shock to many viewers going by the early online reaction, Matt Damon has a surprisingly lengthy appearance in the mid-section of the movie, something the actor has not exactly kept hidden when doing press for other movies (even if he did admittedly downplay it as a small role). Damon shows up once the Endurance heads to the second planet, the ice-covered Mann, named after the famous Dr. Mann who led the expedition there, and the very man who they find in stasis (played by Damon). They originally visited Mann under the belief that Dr. Mann found it to be viable for sustaining life, yet it turns out that he falsified data so that the Endurance would rescue him from his life of solitude. This leads to Mann sabotaging Cooper's oxygen supply, killing crew member Rommily and attempting to steal one of their space shuttles to fly back to the Endurance. However, Mann screws up docking into the ship, exploding himself in the process (an underwear-changing moment for many audiences, no doubt), allowing Cooper and co. to rescue the damaged Endurance and proceed with their mission. Though many have criticised the Damon portion of the film for feeling superfluous and unnecessary, it does at least provide a nice surprise for those who haven't been paying too much attention to the movie's production.
