Is Mel Gibson taking on Balboa?
Mel Gibson has taken a little break after his latest epic movie Apocalytpo was released late last year and he now seems ready to move on to his next project which according to The Daily Express will be a movie about Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez De Balboa. They say Gibson is currently out in Costa Rica scouting locations, where he recently bought a £12 million acre-ranch to live in for most of the next 12 months. The paper claim it's so he can get out of the Hollywood spotlight after last summer's antics but we are all over that by now, so I don't see why he would run away. If he's shooting a movie over there then he probably just bought it to stay in whilst he is working there? Surely it's got nothing to do with running away. Vaso Nunze De Balboa is famous for being the first European to lead an expedition to reach the Pacific from The New World, a feat he achieved in 1513. He is from the era of Christopher Columbus and his tale of a treacherous journey to reach the pacific including many bloody battles sounds just up Gibson's alley. I think Gibson is a terrific director and his three epic movies now are all stunning in different ways, his last movie Apocalypto being a film that I know I will enjoy for years to come. Just absolutely stunning to watch, I can't believe I missed it on the big screen. If this is true and Gibson is planning this as his next picture then this is great news. As much as I like Lethal Weapon and a return to that franchise would be fun, I would much rather see him behind the camera giving us these cinematic masterpieces that are truly defining how historical epics should be done. source - moviehole
