Perhaps the most obvious form of preparation that Bill Skarsgard went through for It, was his extensive makeup and costume work which breathed life into Pennywise.

The bright red streaks of makeup on the lips and cheeks made Skarsgard's natural smile even more sinister. The bright orange hair and old fashioned clown costume provided a boost of creepiness. The changing colors of Pennywise's eyes from blue to a glowing orange signified the creature's impending attacks. The hidden teeth appeared more alien than human.

All of these horrific details were carefully picked out to design the look of Pennywise, creating a devilish blend of circus clown and sadistic monster. To achieve the full look, Skarsgard endured nearly two and a half hours of makeup work on set, with designers carefully picking out each and every detail, from the minute to the crucial.

Skarsgard himself did not know how his costume would look, so he practiced different movements and looks as his demonic look was slowly revealed to him. Skarsgard revealed that it was both "amazing" and "terrifying" to view his own transformation from a handsome young actor into a disgustingly scary clown that has scared millions for nearly three decades.
