It Chapter 2: Every Character Ranked Worst To Best

1. Richie Tozier - Bill Hader/Finn Wolfhard

Bill Hader is very, very good. Not just in Chapter 2, but generally speaking. He's funny, charming and immensely likeable, even when he's playing somewhat provocatively unlikeable characters. In anyone else's hands, the grown-up Richie could have been a relentless douchebag, but Hader's subtle performative observations make his vulnerabilities and how much he's over-compensating brilliant.

He and Finn Wolfhard are absolutely perfectly cast together, just as Ransone and Grazer were, and they're both as good as each other. Had this been a movie only about them, it would have arguably been better.

There's a good subtext in here concerning his sexuality and it has to be said that one of the most impressive decisions was to not have Richie use the final victory as a platform to come out. It looks for a long time that he's going to do it, but the most important part of his arc is that he feels comfortable with the idea of his own sexuality, rather than being made to feel like he has to suppress it. That's far more important than him coming out to friends who would have accepted him anyway. It's a rare moment of welcome restraint in the script.
