Shortly after the the first film's release, Muschietti spoke with Yahoo about where the plot of the sequel could go. Keeping with the book's narrative, the Argentine director teased idea of exploring the transdimensional elements of King's novel. In the book, The Loser's Club venture into a dimension known as the deadlights where they confronted Pennywise in natural form - a creepy spider-demon. Muschietti believes visiting the deadlights could fit well into the story of the sequel.

Muschietti cited budget constraints as to why the transdimensional plot point was not explored in the first part. He had this to say:

"There’s another movie to expand into that. Also, there’s a physical truth that it’s a movie that has a budget. And I didn’t want to get into a depiction of a realm that f***s up our budget, the creation of a world that will basically suck up half of our budget, and would have to sacrifice a lot of things."
