It’s Official - Movie Comedies Are DEAD

4. The Death Of The Movie Star Has REALLY Hurt Comedy

Comedies are more personality-driven affairs than any other genre, where you might be compelled to see the new Seth Rogen or Kevin Hart movie purely because of who they are, rather than the particulars of their film's plot.

But the movie star has never felt less relevant in contemporary Hollywood - few actors outside of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise, and Denzel Washington are true brands in of themselves anymore, where their presence alone can typically get butts in seats.

And the same is absolutely true of comedy - take 2019's well-received Long Shot, which despite starring Rogen and Charlize Theron, grossly underperformed at the box office.

With famed comedians typically being the prime selling point of most big-budget comedy movies, the lessened importance of star power in recent times has done them serious damage - especially if they're pure comedies without an additional hook.

And if even the most successful comedians on the planet can't deliver box office hits, it puts the genre in an incredibly tough spot moving forward.
