Jack Black: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked

5 That Sucked

5. Brad Harris - The Big Year (2011)

Never, ever star in a film with Steve Martin. When he's on form - as he was for a long time - he's a scene stealer, completely ungenerous without intention or malice, and when he's poor, he's usually going to tear the entire film down with him. Somewhat fortunately for co-stars Black and Owen Wilson, this not-funny comedy didn't actually have all that far to fall. The Big Year is end-of-weekend, brainless comedy stuffing for people who aren't actually all that interested in laughing at their funny films. It's for anyone who wants to put as little effort into involving themselves in the feelings of a film or its characters as the film-makers did here in tying the talented trio of stars together coherently. Instead of them bouncing off one another, the three simply happen to be near one another, not being funny while every eye-lid in the audience droops in ironic appreciation of Steve Martin's worryingly frozen face.
