Jack Nicholson At 80: His 10 Best Performances

6. Daryl Van Horne (The Witches Of Eastwick)

Batman The Joker Jack Nicholson
Warner Bros.

All that was required was a dash of devil but it's still more or less Jack Nicholson playing to the camera, and who's complaining? The role of Van Horne simply allows Nicholson a platform to brilliantly show off his comic talents.

The bedroom scene with Alexandra Menford (Cher) perfectly encapsulates how seductive and manipulative Van Horne is. At first however, Alex is oblivious to his satin pyjamas and silky small talk, instead proffering a brutally harsh put down (or more specifically, down boy!).

Then again, he does admit to being "just your average horny little devil". Just as she's about to walk away, Nicholson - ahem - Van Horne performs his own withering put down on Alex's mundane existence and also what she's yearning for at that precise moment. Hmm, perhaps a case of art imitating Nicholson's life?

Ironically, in a complete role reversal in real life, Cher said in an interview with the Daily Mail a few years ago that, "the director of The Witches Of Eastwick had called and said I was too old for the part I ended up playing. He said, 'Jack Nicholson doesn’t find you sexy.’ I came off the phone and cried – but that night I went out dancing."
