Jake Gyllenhaal: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

And 5 That Sucked...

5. Officer Taylor - End Of Watch

David Ayer's return to the crime-ridden streets of LA (after the unparalleled Training Day and the extremely paralleled Street Kings) with 2012's End Of Watch was met with mainly positive reviews from critics and a decent box office. That's despite the totally unnecessary found footage gimmick, which at best put viewers right in the thick of fire fights - ie they're noisy and confusing - and at worst makes absolutely zero sense - right, so why are these gang bangers filming themselves going to murder somebody? Do they just like leaving a trail of evidence? Still, it was an effective little crime drama, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña LAPD officers coming up against the full force of a Mexican drug cartel after stumbling across a serious stash of their product. Gyllenhaal has the unenviable task of being the cop who explains he's documenting all of the film's events for a class he's taking, and the spends the rest of the film doing a decent portrayal of what a South Central beat cop probably is like: a little obnoxious, by-the-book, and absolutely nothing approaching a three-dimensional character.
