James Bond: 10 Awesome Gadgets That Would Never Work In Real Life
6. The 'Flying' AMC Matador
In the film Man with the Golden Gun (1974) Francisco Scaramanga had an AMC Matador coupe as his signature vehicle of choice. But what's so awesome about that you ask? Well, only the fact Francisco had the equipment to graft a pair of wings on to his so it could fly, in homage to the U.S's 'Aerocars' experimental program. The concept of a flying car is one that mankind has fantasized about for years, though the term 'flying' gives more of a Fifth Element impression as opposed to a literal car with wings. As for never working in real life, several models and prototype cars were built by designer Moulton Taylor, known as the 'Aerocar'. However, there was never enough interest in production for them to see past the experimental stage, though several were allegedly functioning. But ultimately, this proves that while the gadget 'could work' in reality, it won't simply because of the complications, production costs, and requirements of such a vehicle to be mass produced. Plus the specifications of such cars would relegate them to more of a novelty rather than that of a practical and modern vehicle. As for Scaramanga, I'm not entirely sure why he wanted a flying car. A discreet Assassin lurking in the shadows, who doesn't want his identity public? Flying car, yep. Definitely the appropriate vehicle of choice there.
