5. On Her Majestys Secret Service
Now come on, this was inevitable. I always ranked his highly, but rewatching it was a delight because I forgot just quite how good it is. Theres not much to be said that hasnt been said, but- great Bond girl, the best portrayal of Blofeld, incredible scenery, incredible camerawork, incredible set design, incredible stuntwork whats not to like? And of course, it has the best ending of all the films. The most shocking, a genuine gutpunch moment that youd never expect from a James Bond film. The first time we actually see the consequences of death in a Bond film. Its all terribly romantic, and Louis Armstongs song We Have All The Time In The World is actually better in my opinion than John Barrys instrumental opening. Blofelds plot and all the sleeper agent girls from around the world with psychedelic hypnotism is a bit stupid, but very fun and never takes away from the entertainment and the drama. But for me, the hero of the film is George Lazenby. Im not saying this simply to root for the underdog, but he had so much potential its an utter shame he chose not to reprise the role (something the silly sod doubtless kicks himself about all the time!), as he is brilliant and gives so much in both his only Bond film and his acting debut. Sure its not perfect, but its a damn sight better than Connerys final three official and non-official efforts. Its not hard to see why this has been re-evaluated as one of the best of the series, and is one of Christopher Nolans biggest influences as a filmmaker. Need I say any more?
