James Bond: Ranking The Theme Songs From Worst To Best

11. Nobody Does It Better (From "The Spy Who Loved Me") - Carole King The Spy Who Loved Me

Description: Now we're getting somewhere. These are the tunes that while they aren't the best of the best, they're certainly a stone's throw away from the upper bracket. And what a better way to start this section off than with the unofficial second theme song to the Bond franchise. If the Dr. No theme is the epitome of James Bond's action themes, then Nobody Does It Better is its romantically inclined twin. Carole King really outdid herself when she delivered this love letter to the man whose love is as deadly as his vengeance, and this song is the one that helps bridge the gap between light and lovely with dark and dangerous. Somewhere between this and the James Bond theme lies the perfect theme. Choice Lyrics:"I wasn't looking, but somehow you found me. I tried to hide from your love light. / But like heaven above me, the spy who loved me, is keeping all my secrets safe tonight." First off, this song gets points for working the title of the film in organically. It's not shoe-horned, just lightly referenced, and it's an easy sell. Second, it's a love song that doesn't have to be mopey. This woman isn't getting to schmaltzed up about 007, but she's a big fan. It's romance without the over-dramatic hyperbole, and it's such a smooth listen that Marvin Hamlisch's legacy is well remembered in part thanks to songs like this.
