James Bond: Ranking The Theme Songs From Worst To Best

4. Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey

Goldfinger

Description: Surely you didn't think I'd forgotten about Dame Shirley's debut, did you? After all, this is THE song that defined Bond themes for all time, and no one could have expected the impact it would have had after a relatively tame (but still effective) number like From Russia With Love. Much like Thunderball would down the line, Goldfinger starts with a bang. However, instead of going guns blazing for the duration, Bassey is allowed to work the song at her own pace and truly give it the gusto by time she sings about Goldfinger's love of his very elemental namesake. She doesn't need to impress us, and she know it; so instead she spends her time doing the job she was sent here to do and does it well. Dame Shirley, we salute you as the ultimate Bond Woman. Choice Lyrics: "Golden words he will pour in your ear, but he eyes can disguise what you fear. For a golden girl knows when he's kissed her...it's the kiss of death." Classic Bondian intrigue, with only the slightest of innuendo. Plus it kinda helps that they invoke the myth of King Midas' golden touch, as Auric Goldfinger expects everything he sets his mind on to glitter like the Sun. If anyone has an ego bigger than Goldfinger, Odd Job will be sure to take care of them.
