James Bond: Ranking The Theme Songs From Worst To Best

2. Skyfall - Adele

Skyfall

Description: This song has the greatest potential out of all of the James Bond themes in the past couple decades to become a legendary entry, as well as a future number 1. I'm still reticent to name it as such at this point, simply because it needs time to appreciate and build its credibility. However, with its short span of current existence, it blows the doors off of almost all previous themes as it deals with a part of Bond we've never seen before...his lack of parental support. The song plays like a true Bond theme, don't get me wrong, but there's so much subtext layered in both the lyrics and Adele's lush vocals that it's easy to be mistaken that this is just aping the old style of Bond tunes. Oh, how wrong those people would be... Choice Lyrics: "Let the sky fall. When it crumbles, we will stand tall, and face it all together." Skyfall, as a film and as a song, focuses on James and his relationship with M, the surrogate mother who chose him to become a surrogate son in Her Majesty's Clandestine Services. Every day Bond is risking his life on M's orders, and for what? A life of solitary existence, simply because anyone he loves will be killed. However, his love (and sometimes hatred) for M as a mother is a love that has not been tested in such a manner. By the end of Skyfall, it's been through the ringer as James has doubted, scorned, sniped, and ultimately made peace with the relationship he's had with her for so many years. Much like any parent, every decision she made was to protect him, not to kill him. In the end, she always did right by him, and even he could see it. She always stood by him when his world crumbled, and for that he will forever be grateful.
