James Cameron: Ranking His Films From Worst To Best
3. Alita Battle Angel
Cameron's latest film, and also one of his biggest passion projects. This movie, based on an ultra obscure manga from the '90s, has been on the back burner for Cameron for almost 20 years before production finally went through.
On the one hand, it was really cool to hear it was finally happening. The author of the original Alita notoriously hates anime and only had a two episode OVA made to promote his book, so the fact that any other adaptation got off the ground at all was a plus. On the other hand, the last James Cameron pet project before this was Avatar, so people were starting to think he had lost his touch.
This movie proved them all wrong. While not his best film, it still shows a deep love and appreciation for the source material, while also being more than willing to make necessary changes to make a better story. And it still has all the best aspects of a great Cameron movie, as well as all the hallmarks of the original manga. If you've been looking for a truly great live action anime film, you can't do much better right now than this one.
