James McAvoy: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

1. Jay - Bollywood Queen

Bollywood Queen

Bollywood Queen was an attempted adaptation of William Shakespeare€™s Romeo & Juliet. To add a quirky twist, Juliet is played by an Indian actress who performs Bollywood-esque songs throughout the film. With McAvoy as the leading man and Preeya Kalidas as his love interest, Bollywood Queen sets out to explore love, lust and lots of betrayal. While the project may look to cling to an interesting twist on an established, traditional story, the results are undeniably bad. It€™s poorly written, horribly shot and reverts to stereotypes that immediately give the film an air of contempt. While the musical aspect of the film may appeal to some, Bollywood Queen never pushes itself any further than its low-budget ambitions imply, reverting to sentiment and values associated within Bollywood cinema. Despite the major flaws within the film, no one stands out or manages to elevates the material. Instead, it's a drab, monotonous bore that includes McAvoy in what is probably his worst role to date. This is one of McAvoy€™s earliest performances, and it really does show. Nothing here suggests that he's an actor capable of some of the fine performances mentioned on this list - he just "says" his dialogue, to the point where it's almost laughable. The real heart of the film should have arisen from his relationship with Kalidas, constructing a chemistry that epitomises their love. The only problem is that there is chemistry at all - it feels flat, tired and forced. This is certainly a performance that any fan of McAvoy would like to forget. Same goes for McAvoy himself, perhaps. Agree or disagree with this list? Let us know in the comments section below.
